The Dark Night of the Soul
Inevitably along the spiritual path that are times and periods when the Light that used to shine so bright and clear seems to have vanished. It is often referred to as the dark night of the soul or ego blindness. It is as though darkness is all there is.
Sometimes you may be able to attribute this darkness and not feeling good to this or that. Other times you may not be able to. There will be times when the darkness seemingly has no reason for being there. Yet it is.
It is like all that we used to know – we no longer know. The Light that we used to see – is no longer there. It is like being in room, initially flooded with Light and then someone turns off the light. All of a sudden we are surrounded by nothing but darkness.
Once we have come to an understanding of what the dark night of the soul are, they are to be cherished. These periods of ego blindness, because that is what they really are, truly are a Divine blessing of transformation worthy of our outmost gratitude.
All of spiritual growth is about letting go of that which no longer serves us
What we want you to realize is that all of spiritual growth is about letting go. You may or may not have heard this before. Perhaps you understand what it means or maybe you don’t. But what it means is that at the core of your being, you already are all that you will ever be. You are an infinite being, and so nothing can ever be added onto who you are. You already are enlightened.
However, as we are born onto this planet we learn things. We are taught stories about how limited we are. About how limited Life is. We are told stories about why we are not worthy of Love or prosperity or health. Perhaps even about how we will never be worthy of Love or prosperity or health.
The old stories are now beginning to dissolve
And so as we buy into all those stories, perceptions, beliefs, perceptions and judgments, walls are built covering up the Light and the Love that inherently dwells within us.
We begin to navigate through Life with those stories as our compass. They cloud our perception of ourselves and of Life, to the point where joy, Love and peace is only derived from the world. To the point where we have lost all conscious connection with them within us.
But then, for whatever reason, we have that awakening moment. The moment where we begin to realize that all that we thought we knew and believed, perhaps is not just true.
We have that initial insight that perhaps, there is more to Life than what we have perceived up to this moment. A growing desire to find this out is awakened. And at some point we set the intention to seek that which is True and Real rather than what we have been told and are telling ourselves.
Before we can let anything go – we need to become aware that it is there
In that moment – we have begun to awaken. However, as we have pointed out, you have not begun this journey to be eternally happy. You did not come here just to feel good all the time. But you came to get free. Free from those small, limited perceptions you have been led to hold true. This however means that you first need to become aware of which they are.
This is where the dark night of the soul comes in.
It is not possible to let go or release anything that you are not conscious of. And so, from the moment of awakening – the rest of the journey is a discovery of that which no longer serves you. It may be thoughts and beliefs of disease, or lack and scarcity. Perhaps it is a low sense of self worth and lovability. Whatever it is that holds you back, that keeps you playing small and victimized – you need to become aware of it you desire to go beyond it.
In other words, they need to be pulled to the surface where you can shine the Light of awareness upon them. And as this happens, as they bubble up from within you, we will experience periods and moments of discomfort and unease, of not feeling good.
Along the spiritual path, the dark night of the soul is truly a blessing
What we want you to realize is that those moments of darkness and feeling bad are actually a blessing. They are the physical manifestation of the old dying and the new emerging. It’s like a re-configuration of your system.
And in that period of the old not quite having dissolved yet, and the new not quite having emerged yet, there is confusion. Distortion. Temporary ego blindness.
This is the dark night of the soul. And so it truly is a blessing. These periods of ego blindness truly are a Divine gift of transformation.
Which is how and why this feeling bad is actually something good happening. And it is happening according to the Divine order. Much like puberty. Puberty may appear as a very chaotic period, where the individual may feel bad.
There is only order in the cosmos
However, it is not chaotic, but it is Chaordic. This simply means that underneath that which appears to be chaos, there is Divine order. Puberty – as well as the dark night of the soul – is nothing but a transitioning from the old to the new. All in perfect order. The only thing that has truly changed is that ego blindness has descended upon us. The ego has temporarily gone blind as transformation is taking place.
And so, rather than bemoaning and complaining about how we suddenly are not feeling to good we want to be grateful for it. Yesterday everything was fine. Today all we want to do is to stay inside, lock the door, turn off the phone and go back to sleep.
Learn to walk by remembered radiance
This means that that which we once knew, the Light that once was so clear and bright, is still there. It has not gone away. It has not moved and it has not changed. God is forever the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
And so, as we move through the dark night of the soul, it is well to remind ourselves that what we used know for true, is still true.
Even though we can’t see it anymore. Even when we don’t believe it anymore – the Light is still there. It is still shining as brightly as ever before. God is always the same, yesterday, today and forever.
And through the remembrance of it, we may still navigate towards it. Even though we momentarily have lost sight of it or faith in it.
The Light is still there
Just like the captain of a ship moving through deep fog with zero visibility, she still maintains her direction even though she cannot see her destined port.
She knew her direction before the ship went into the fog. And the fact that the fog is preventing her from even being able to see the bow of the boat she still knows that as long as she doesn’t deviate from her previously set course she will eventually emerge out of the fog and into full visibility again.
This is how we navigate through the dark night of the soul. This is the faith we need to have. Even when our faith is seemingly lost, we need to remember what we used to know. And to trust that the Light as we used to know it – is still the same Light. It is still there. And so we continuously need to fall back on that which we used to trust.
So we remember that which we used to know and we choose to keep navigating by it. Nothing has really changed other than that our ability to see that which is true has been diminished. We may be temporarily blindfolded but we remember the direction we used to walk in. We remember what we used to know and what we used to trust. And so, we hold fast to it.
Keep moving in the direction of the Light where you knew it to be
In other words, if we used to believe and navigate by the insight that all is working for our good. That God is forever for us never against us. Then, even when surrounded by complete darkness we may still choose to believe that this is so.
If we used to know that we have a purpose and that we are on purpose. That there is only perfect order in the cosmos even when the light is seemingly out, we remember that which we used to know. And we keep moving toward it. Even if our steps are small and staggering. Even when we need to put both our hands out in front of us so to not bump into anything.
In times where it simply is too hard: we may surrender to that and ask God for help. Ask and it shall be given – if only we can bracket our fears, doubts and worries.
If we keep moving this way, navigating by the Light we used to know, then all of a sudden – moments later, hours later, days later, weeks later or even longer – that Light switch is turned on again. Only this time the Light is so much brighter and so much more luminous than ever before.
There is a saying; the farther down we go – the higher up we will come.
The darkness is a blessing in disguise
As with every challenge there is a blessing hidden within it. And so these dark moments have within them, the potential to allow us to go that much higher if we navigate through them.
These periods of ego blindness are transformational in their nature since they are brought about by such immense growth that what used to be, is about to dissolve. Who we used to be is dying and a new version is being birthed. The old is dying and the new is emerging. The greater the darkness the more of the old is dying. And as Light once again emerges something new has been born.
Sort of like the metamorphosis stage during which the caterpillar is being transformed into a butterfly. They are one and the same although completely different. Like two different species. This is the potential hidden in these dark moments. And so they are not to be feared but revered and welcomed.
Truly, the dark night of the soul is a blessing worthy of our deepest gratitude and thanksgiving.
Allow for a new greater and grander version of yourself to emerge
If you ever have been through the dark night of the soul, you will know the blessing it truly was. You made it through the darkness however who you were as you emerged was not the same individual that went into the darkness. You did not emerge at the same place that you moved in, but you were teleported to a different place.
These periods of egoic blindness call forth a great shift within. You will feel lighter and brighter. It is like you somehow, through the darkness have found your way farther up the mountain. And now as the Light once again is surrounding you, you have a higher vantage point. You have gained a higher perspective.
This is when you will realize the blessing of the dark night of the soul. That it in truth is a sweet period of release. Something has dissolved and you may now see clearer and better. Allowing and welcoming another greater and grander version of yourself to emerge.
A new you is emerging
This is a time to celebrate and truly bless the mess that you all but gave into. You will realize that you have turned a seeming tombstone into a steppingstone and it is done through your willingness to surrender and let go.
The veils have been lifted from your eyes and a new level of consciousness has emerged. A new you has been born. Your vibration has been lifted. The scales before your eyes have been partially dissolved and you may now look upon yourself and the world with new eyes. The eyes of God.
